A migraine is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent moderate or severe headaches often in association with a number of autonomic nervous system symptoms. If you are suffering from a migraine headache, you aren’t alone. 9 out of every 10 Americans suffer from headaches. And while some are quite occasional, others are frequent, others dull and throbbing, and still some headaches will cause nausea and debilitating pain.

Causes Of Migraines

Although medical researchers aren’t exactly very sure what causes migraines, they know how you can get one – through changes in blood flow in the brain. To start with, blood vessels constrict, reducing the flow of blood and as a result leading to visual disturbances, speech difficulties and more so numbness, weakness, or sometimes tingling sensation in one area of your body. Later on, the blood vessels dilate, resulting to increased blood flow and a severe headache.

There exists a genetic link to migraine headaches. Observations reveal that at least half of all migraine patients have a family member affected. Other common causes of migraines include the following:

  • Alcohol – more so red wine and beer
  • Certain foods such as chocolate, peanut butter, aged cheeses and fermented foods
  • Crying
  • Skipping meals
  • Fluctuations in hormones – for instance, during pregnancy, before and during periods, and menopause
  • Certain odors such as perfumes may also cause migraines
  • Stress, be it physical or emotional, can result to a headache (happens when you are relaxing after a stressful time)
  • Sleeping too little or too much
  • Smoking or being exposed to tobacco
  • Some medications
  • High humidity and high attitude
  • caffeine

Apart from these causes, there are a number of risk factors that associated with migraines:

  • Gender – studies show that women are 3 times more likely to get migraines than their male counterparts
  • Age - migraines tend to get better as you age.
  • Birth control pills – this puts you at risk only if your migraines are affected by changes in estrogen levels.

And what do you do when you get a headache? Go to the pharmacy and buy medication? Or do you visit your doctor time and again only to have to visit yet AGAIN. Taking medications, including antinausea drugs, ibuprofen, acetaminophen and aspirins, may subside the condition for quite some time – but it’s unlikely that the problem will go away for good.

Well, with chiropractic care, there are better options for treating headaches. Chiropractic care takes care of the problem at its source. Instead of treating the migraine, its causes are eliminated and relieved so that there are no more conditions resulting to migraines again.
